A passport is required for travel to Cyprus. A visa is not required for a stay of up to 90 days. For longer stays, a visa or residence permit is required.
U.S. citizens should be mindful that the Government of Cyprus does not recognize the residence permits issued by Turkish Cypriot authorities for the portions of the island under Turkish Cypriot administration.
The Government of Cyprus requires all citizens of non-EU countries (including Americans) who may enter without a visa and who live outside the government-controlled area to obtain a residence permit from the Republic of Cyprus Migration Department if they remain on the island for more than 90 days.
On occasion, Americans who resided in the area administered by Turkish Cypriots for more than 90 days without a Republic of Cyprus residence permit have been detained by officials at Larnaca airport and denied entry into the government-controlled area. They also may be subject to prosecution. |
